Body and Soul’s “Feel Good Now”

The Body and Soul team held an exclusive health event on 10th October which brought together health food specialists, a nutritionist, fitness specialists, a cooking demonstration, food samplings and fitness assessments – everything that you needed to get back on your fitness path. 

Our listeners renewed their understanding of healthy eating and fitness at the ONAKA Healing Kitchen, this was what our listeners learnt.

 

 

Health Talk: Life is Sweet Without Sugar

Nutritional Therapist Pooja Vig from the Nutrition Clinic helped our listeners figure out how sugar affects energy, cravings, weight and children’s behaviour and concentration. Understanding the role of the Glycemic Load of food and discovering how to design our diet using the right foods and supplements.

 

Cooking Demonstration: Healing Through Food

Healthy-food specialists from the ONAKA Healing Kitchen show our listeners how to prepare a simple yet delicious meal. We joined them in their Open Kitchen and said goodbye to oily and unhealthy preserved and processed options and savoured the goodness of whole and organic  ingredients. 

Fitness Analysis
Fitness specialists from Unleash Fitness Gym gave us an overall assessment of our weight, flexibility, strength and measurements. They showed us how to begin our fitness regimen the safe and effective way.

Skinny Legs = Heart Disease?

“People with thigh sizes below 24 in (or 60 cm), even after other factors like smoking and high cholesterol  were taken into account, showed higher levels of heart disease. It is thought that narrow thighs could be associated with too little muscle mass and this may help doctors identify at-risk patients.”

Luckily i have 25.5″ thighs. But i wonder which healthy woman will have 24″ thighs or bigger? Probably none. Something to ponder over…

How Easy It is to Go Off Your Diet

A person is required to have a 3500 kcal deficit in their diet in a week  before he/she is able to see weight loss of 1lb. That translates to 500 kcal a day. To put that into perspective, you will need to cut out about 1.5 bowls of rice a day or add 1 hour of moderate intensity treadmill work to generate a 500 kcal deficit.

Now you go on a diet adding exercise and eating less rice. So far so good. However, you also add a medium sized packet of potato chips or some kind of junk food into your diet everyday. It is easy to eat that little snack and think that you’re still on track, simply because the snack is not very filling and is very tasty. You munch it up in less than 3 seconds. However, what you might not realise is that these sinful snacks are actually very dense in calories. For eg. a medium sized packet of potato chips can contain 400 kcals. Have something like that everyday and you have already blown the 500 kcal deficit you have set for yourself. On days when your friends come over and you have 2 snacks; now you’re on your way to packing on more fats, when all the time you think you’re on a ‘diet’.

What is the take home message here? First, learn to read food labels. Look at the number of calories each snack contains and if you do need to snack, choose something with lower calories. In addition, you can have a ‘cheat/reward’ meal once in a while but make sure you don’t overdo it. So be strict with yourself all days of the week at all meals, except for 2 meals a week where you can have something you will not normally have, like an ice cream. That meal helps to keep you sane on a diet.

So, if you are not losing weight, try to take a closer look at what you are eating. A harmless cookie here and a tablespoon of ice cream there can slowly add up and eat up that deficit that you are aiming to work towards.

Gym Review: Jurong West SSC ClubFITT Gym

Today we’ll talk about Jurong West ClubFITT Gym which is pretty new and very spacious. It overlooks the swimming pool which provides a pretty good view. If you are into machines, they have a good variety of them and of good quality.  They have a really good piece of equipment which is the modified glute ham raise. Great for your glutes and hamstrings and it is not found at other SSC gyms I believe. Also they have a small ladies corner (see pic) so ladies will like it there. However, it can get very packed during peak hours. Common mistake again like with the other SSC gyms include having a squat rack instead of a power rack. I won’t comment on the users there as I myself seldom train there.

6/10 for this gym.

Gym Review: Seng Kang ClubFITT Gym

Sengkang gym is pretty new and the place is spacious. However, as with the other SSC gyms, this place can be quite packed during peak hours. There’s a decent number of good quality cardio machines, 2 free weight areas (one heavy one light) and one section full of machines.  The strength equipment are not bad but dumbbells can go heavier. The atmosphere there is pretty commercialised, just like all the other newer SSC gyms. Most of the crowd there are into health and fitness. Big bodybuilders are a rare sight. I’d like to note that the full time fitness instructor there is very friendly and approachable.

I’ll give this gym a 6/10 (the squat rack sucks. Get a power rack next time)

Gym Review: Bedok ClubFITT Gym

Dear readers, I will be posting a series reviews of gyms around the island. Today, I’ll start off with the one I’m most familiar with: Bedok Gym. This is the place where I first started training and I am still training there on a regular basis.

Bedok gym doesn’t have the newest of equipment but people there are generally friendly and that alone provides a very comfortable environment to train in. What I think is lacking is perhaps a decline bench press, a seated calf raise and chest supported row (hint hint Bedok Fitness Centre Management). A prominent figure at Bedok gym is Uncle Pang Nai Seng. This veteran bodybuilder who competed in Mr. Universe in the 1960s now coaches at Bedok gym. His total dedication to bodybuilding and fitness can easily be seen as he spends most of his time at the gym providing quality advice to his disiciples.

The gym is generally quiet in the mornings and afternoons but can be quite packed at night. Most of the crowd there are into fitness and there are not many ‘hardcore’ bodybuilders.
I would give Bedok gym 7 out of 10 stars.
